- START GR327684 West Chirton Industrial Estate (Plenty of parking)
- Head NW under the A1058. After 450m fork left under a bridge then sharp right up a small rise. Follow the disused railway path through industrial units and across various roads and barriers until the track ends at a minor road (299683)
- Go straight across over a barrier onto a grassy track which can be seen leading to the top of the hill in Rising Sun Country Park (highest point in N Tyneside.) Follow this, trending right to the summit. Just before the top turn right onto an obvious track descending SW (care at bottom) to a track which passes between housing and an open field and leads to the A186 at (290684)
- Go straight over for 950m to a junction (entrance to sports ground). Turn left through a 5-bar gate down a stony track. After 650m the track lies adjacent to the railway line. Shortly after this climb slightly to a railway bridge and turn right and join a tarmac cycle track past new housing. Keep straight on at 2 barriers to a zebra crossing with “Horse” traffic lights. (276674)
- Go straight over onto the Coxlodge wagon way and keep to this line for 1.7km going straight over each road. This path ends at the A191 in South Gosforth. 150m before the end turn left into Lilburn Gardens leading in 100m to Freeman Road. Cross Freeman road and go through a narrow gate onto a singletrack leading into Jesmond Dene. (256679)
- Follow this track down to the river then head due S down the Dene. There are numerous routes down the Dene, but the best is to keep close to the river all the way and stay on main paths. After animal corner keep straight on under the A1058. Follow the road for 600m turning first right, then left into The Northern Sinfonia Car Park. (263654)
- Keep following the Ouseburn. Steep climb forking left to top and park gate. Phew! Turn right to reach Warwick St. Cross over and follow road along side open area for 400m. At end of road turn right through a barrier onto a tarmac path. Follow this zig-zag down some steps right to the bottom underneath the huge railway bridges. Keep on to Byker Bank Cross into Ford St. Then fork right into Maling St. to join the Quayside road.
- Turn left past factories to a roundabout (272637) keep straight on towards St. Peter’s Basin. Keep left at junction and look for signs for Cycle Route 72 shortly after. Go through barrier onto disused railway track. Follow the signs and cycle route for 8.5km to the A187 at (333668). Cross over onto the top of Telford St. Turn left for 60m then right onto a track which descends and bears sharp left under a bridge onto a disused railway line. Follow this back to the start.
