- START GR 7467412 Garrigill
- Head SSE along the road and climb past farms. Keep right along track as lane falls off left. Keep well above Tynehead farm following the river then up to a col before descending to a junction beside the Tees Bridge ((762339)
- Cross bridge and follow right bank of river . Track becomes indistinct but keep straight on. After 3km cross the river and head left of radar station on Great Dunn Fell. Turn left onto access road and descend to junction at (676274)
- Turn right and follow road for 4km past Milburn to Blencarn (637313). Turn sharp right at a bend, then left at next junction. Drop down over the river and climb up to Kirkland. Cross the bridge and climb up heading NE past cottages.
- Continue on this line up a very steep ascent, contouring round before crossing the ridge line from Cross Fell (681351) (Fine views to Alston)
- Follow markings for the Pennine Way over wild countryside for 11km before a very steep descent back to the start.
