- START GR 303976 Car Park in Coniston
- Turn left out of the car park past the church to the high street then right along the A593 for 2km. Turn left onto a minor road leading to the old Tilberthwaite Quarry (305011). Bear right to the farm then join a track heading NE past more old quarry workings and through the woods to the River Brathay at (316028)
- Ford the river and keep straight on to tarmac road. Turn left and follow the road, forking left after the cattle grid at (302033). Climb steadily over Wrynose Pass, then descend to a junction at Cockley Beck (246017)
- Turn left and follow the Duddon Valley for 6km. The road leaves the Duddon and Crosses a col to Seathwaite Bridge (232968). Just after the bridge turn sharp left onto a narrow road. Follow this for 300m to a fork. Fork right and keep right to a gate.
- This is the start of the Walna Scar Road. Climb steeply up the side of the Gill for 1.3km to a gate in the wall. Keep on (even steeper) to a saddle below Brown Pike (258965)
- Zig-zag down (loose) then continue to Cove Bridge. Carry straight on and enjoy a good descent all the way back to Coniston
