- START GR 168068 Car Park alongside Wastwater
- Turn left out of the car park and follow the road for 1.5km. Turn right towards the camp-site. Go past the camp-site and a climbing hut. The track steepens and climbs due S through trees towards Burnmoor Tarn. (several short carries needed). Cross the footbridge beside the tarn (187046)
- Keep straight on S maintaining height above the stream, climbing at first, then descending steadily along the valley for 3.5km before crossing the river at Boot (177012)
- Keep straight on to T-junction at Brook House then turn right along the road for 4km to Eskdale Green. 600m after the Post Office turn right up the Miterdale valley. (136002)
- After 1km take the bridleway for Irton Pike which branches left over a river bridge, then climbs up through the forest emerging high on Irton Fell (135023)
- Enjoy a steep and technical descent down to the forest. Enter the forest keeping straight on to meet a tarmac road at (128037). Turn right over the river, then immediately right again towards Wastwater.
- Follow the road back to the start.
