Hexhamshire Common—23km—medium

  

  

• START GR 927577: Whitley Chapel
• Head due west towards Springwell House, ignoring the right turn to Whitley Mill. Follow this road until it ends at (894559)
• Follow straight ahead up and on to the moors along a well defined track which leads eventually to Stobb Cross (864539). This can be wet and boggy in winter or after heavy rain.
• At the cross-roads at Stobb Cross turn right and descend to join a walled lane which leads to the Allendale Road beside Scotch Halls (846547)
• Follow the road downhill to Allendale (Shops and refreshments if needed)
• From Allendale centre follow the B6303 towards Hexham but just after a sharp bend in the road turn left up a steady hill between houses old and new to Moorhouse gate (846567)
• Turn due East here and after 1.5km the track deteriorates but can be followed in the same directionfor 2.5 km until it meets the trackcrossing Whapweasel Burn. Follow this track all the way to Dalton (919581)
• Turn right at Dalton, up the steep hillto rejoin the road on which you began. Left back to Whitley Chapel
