OS Landranger map 87
Hexham & Haltwhistle
A fine route with some interesting scenery and good views. Hard in wet conditions.
- START GR 782646 Bardon Mill
- From the centre go across the level crossing to the footbridge over the Tyne. Cross the river and turn right along a minor road to Willimontswick ((772637) . Turn left up the lane and follow this pleasant lane (steep in places) to a T-junction at (772621).
- Turn right here and continue to follow the track SW as it swings past rock House. When you reach the mine workings bear left until a track is seen alongside a fence which skirts the mine workings to the South. (Ignore the track leading in to the mined area and head uphill instead) The track eventually emerges at a T-junction at (594737) and not as shown on the OS Map. Turn left up to a junction with a minor road. Follow this minor road West all the way to Lnnehead (688595) . Staggered junction straight on to Coanwood.
- Follow the road into Coanwood for 1km as it curves round until a sign indicates the start of the South Tyne Rail Path. Follow the rail path to the first minor road at (682608) and then turn left past Featherstone Castle and follow the river to a wonderful old bridge. Cross the river, and climb steeply uphill before taking the first right at a crossroads. (669627)
- Follow the road down . At the bottom of the hill is a sharp left bend. Go straight on here through a gate onto a grassy/muddy track (some pushing) which leads to Wydon before joining the A69 at Haltwhistle. Head east along the A69 for 1.5 km before turning right under a bridge to join the road to Melkridge. Follow this at pace back to the start.
