The first half of this ride is magnificent, but is a long way from help so take care when advised in the description
- START GR 281253 Latrigg Car Park
- Go through the gate at the North-
east corner from the car- park and join a track which crosses open fields through more gates. This track descends in and out of Whit Beck before contouring round to follow a northerly line above the Glenderatera valley. There are some tricky sections. The track becomes less obvious in the section leading up to Skiddaw House (287291) and in this section it is strenuous and necessary to keep moving to avoid a carry. - After Skiddaw House join a rough stony track which leads down and then steadily up to a col at (274310). The descent from here is loose and steep in places and should be handled with care. Join a tarmac road at (249324)
- Turn left here and stay on this road to High Side (234306).
- Turn left along the A591 for 4.5km. For most of the way there is a track just inside the forest (If you stick to the road it is fast but take care) before taking the first minor road left to Applethwaite.. Keep left at every junction to arrive back at Latrigg Car Park.
- N.B. There is a steep dip in the road after the Underscar Hotel (271257). The road on the downhill section is often extremely slippy (even in dry weather) so take great care on the descent or you will not make it round the corner at the stream.
