- START GR 875166 Car Park on A286 near x-roads with South Downs Way
- Head due west along the SDW climbing steadily for 2km . Turn right onto a track between hedges and descend trending right along the ridge to a T-junction at (872172)
- Turn left to meet the road, then right under the disused railway bridge to Cocking (878177). Cross the A286 and follow the lane round the church to a fork at (898175). Turn right and climb to rejoin the South Downs Way at (904165) Turn left for 500m to a bridleway on the right. (874154)
- Turn along this and keep straight on forking right off the forest road after 1km. Continue straight on at every junction to descend to East Dean (905182). Turn right into the village, then right after the phone box. Follow the road to Charlton.
- Turn left after The Red Lion and climb up towards the race course. Turn right at the top and next left to reach the car park on St Roche’s Hill (872109). From the car park entrance, ignore Monarch’s Way and bear left on a track. Follow the edge of a field to a gate then trend left to another gate keeping straight on to meet the A286 at (851108)
- Turn right and immediately left onto a lane. Follow for 1km to the B2141. Turn right and immediately left, climbing up to a saddle. Keep straight on and descend before trending right and climbing back up round the woods to a junction at (824098)
- Turn right. From here keep to the track which contours past the trig point at (824112). Bear left after the trig point forking right after 800m to a poorly defined junction at (818129). Turn sharp right and follow the bridleway to the B2141 at Chilgrove. Turn right for 400m then left and keep straight on to x-roads at (840138)
- Turn left keeping straight on to a track climbing steadily in Venus Wood. At the top turn right and fork right again onto a bridleway leading to the A286 at (874154) If you’ve had enough turn left to the start, else
- Turn right for 300m then left onto a track. zig-zag up then take the bridleway which forks right to Broadham House. Climb up the faint track across the field to a junction of four tracks. Turn left and descend and enter the forest before climbing to the SDW at (894166)
- Turn left along the SDW for 1.7km to the finish
